This week’s reading basically paints a picture of older people, especially elderly women. Instead of emphasizing their great value and their many contributions to society, the chapter makes them sound worthless. It is important in my opinion to realize that the older you get the more experience you have and the better suited you are to make more experienced decisions. I agree that TV makes old people seem weak and vulnerable but I strongly disagree with this view(1).

In many TV shows all of the older ladies are made to look like useless members of society who have no input in discussions and are more often than not on ust asked a question but their information or explanation is never followed. This is manifested because media depicts women as sex objects and subservient to the more dominant male figures and the media creates a myth that once a women reaches a certain age, they will no longer be able to achieve beauty. The fact that our society focuses on external beauty, which we cannot control rather than internal beauty. If women are not made to look like old decrepit ladies, they are often made to look like the typical annoying mother figures that are constantly nagging and getting on their child or husband’s life just like in everybody loves raymond with Marie who is Ray’s mother. Despite the constant bashing and indirect formulation of stereotypes of women on television shows, there still exists women in powerful roles such as Judge Judy who is a very respected and powerful woman who has a respected job. She not only has her own television show be has numerous other accomplishments in her life. Unfortunately these types of women are not usually shown on television because they are not as entertaining as the silly “dumb old lady” characters that are more popular on mainstream media(2).

In society today certain images and stereotypes are reflected on women everywhere. Women are pressured to have hard bodies and silky hair, along with sparkling white teeth and abs of steel, but where do these stereotypes come from? Is it from the books they read or the schools they go to? Or maybe it’s from two of the most popular forms of media today; movies and television. Everyone is supposed to look like Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears or Jessica Alba.

Millions of women are gathering around the television set to soak in negative images of themselves and others. Females are subjected to millions of half-naked women with perfect bodies, sparkling personalities, and flawless faces. Younger females feel insufficient, and older females fear aging. This image of the “perfect” person is not only very desirable, but also extremely unattainable. The television industry has successfully convinced American women everywhere that there is something wrong with all of them, either their teeth aren’t white enough, or their hair isn’t shiny enough. The major television corporations sell their products by convincing consumers they have imperfections which can be easily fixed by buying something; usually something that they are selling. For example, if you are slightly overweight you buy weight loss pills or shakes, and if you have wrinkles on your face you buy anti-wrinkle cream, which by the way does not exist. the following video just proves my point.

I think that we need to change the way that we view the media, as well as change our ways. We would have to start looking at the media in a critical perspective. We should not always beleive everything that we see, we can not always act like a sponge and just simply soak in everything that we see only to later spit out the same and copy what we have seen. The women would have to choose better idols not follow them because of their looks but follow then for what they have done such as their accomplishments, its time for change in the media. Dont you think?

1.http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/egm/media2002/reports/OP3Sanders.PDF

2.http://darlinggender.blogspot.com/

Myspace is a site that almost every person has an account on, if they do not have an account then they would most likely know someone who has an account.Myspace is considered to be a social network. People can use this site for many different reasons, they can vary from just viewing some of their friends’ videos and pictures of themselves, other can also use this site for meeting other people, and there have been cases where people met on myspace, dated and then got married(1). Some other people can use myspace to be in contact with their favorite singer or band, here they can now if their band is currently on tour or if they will be hosting a concert in their city any time soon, sometimes the fans can actually post questions on the bands page and they might get a response back(2). It very simple that almost anyone can be able to sign up for an account, it can literally be done with just a few clicks and typing.

There are quite a few artists and bands that have become who they are today because of myspace, myspace was the place they have first started out, eventually when they have realised that they have gotten many friends that have added them and the amounts of views or listens that they have on their page has significantly increased then they might decised to record a whole cd rather than just one song. Some of these artists are Beyonce, the devil wears prada, panic at the disco and tila tequila just to name a few(3).

Every person has different things on their myspace page, they can choose what they want to show to other guests, such as posting up different photos of themselves, their family and friends. They can also choose to post up some videos about anything they want, these videos can be about something that they have done or tutrials for other people on how to do something. Along with that every person can have a different layout on their myspace page and, they just cannot post up content that is not allowed on by myspace such as vulgar material, nude photos and violence.

Also on your myspace page it will display your most favorite friends, you are in complete control of choosing who you want to put as your best friends, and you also have a choice of how much friends you would like to show. The choices for the amount friends that one can put on their myspace page is 10, 25, or 50. Also part of the layout one can choose to edit can be the background, special effects, they can also add music to the background. There are plenty of sites that allow you to add new stuff to your myspace page the most known is Freemyspacelayouts.ca

Some people may have some fears about myspace, because something has happened to them in the past because of this site or they have heard of something that happened to someone because of myspace and fear that the same could abviously haoppen to them. There have been many arguments about the influence of myspace and what it has on their youth and also if it really does endanger them(4). People have argued that everytime that a child goes on myspace to do whatever it is that they wanted to do they are putting themselves in danger. Some parents think this because they find that the person on the other end could be lying about who they are, and one day they could actually encouter their children and possibly do something wrong to them. Other argue that it is not a very dangerous site since one would only be adding people that they know or have already met once in their lives, there is no real need to talk to strangers. In conclusion myspace is a social place, and yes there are good and bad things that happen on it just like in the real life, and it is most definately here to stay.

I find this article very useful for teachers or future teachers, this article basically sums up the main theme or point of our class. The whole objective is that they want both teachers and future teachers to get the young youth more engaged into the digital media. There are going to be many more jobs that will need the future people to be more locked in with technology they will need to study technology and digital media in a whole new way that today we still do not even know of. Even tody there are places that offer training and classes specifically in digital media, and they are right when they say that they will be the most demanded jobs in the next the years.

Even today there are some young children that already know how to do many things on a computers with a great number of programs as you will see in the following video. But there are also a great number of children that do not know anything about a computer or have very minimal experience using a computer or any other piece of technology. There might be many reasons as to why some children do not get to use technology as much as others, and this is all part of the digital divide. Some families can not afford to purchas a computer or little mp3 players for their children whereas there are others that can, also in different parts of the world some type of technology are rarely seen. This could also happen within a ountry or even a city at some points, in some parts of the city like the lower class where there are not much private schools the children would not have the luxury of using an up to date computer with up to date programs as comparred to the upper class.

I find that the Macarthur foundation has a good lead on what sort of influence the digital media has on the youth, they have found that they might learn quite alot. They have also found out that digital media permits the individuals not only to learn and receive information but also allows the individuals to share their ideas with one another, give their opinions to the rest of the online community. To do this they might use podcasts, or youtube, to film themselves and on the video they will simply state what their opinion is. Anoter way that they can share their opinions is through blogs on the internet, simply using site just like this one. They can also share their opinions on other social sites such as myspace and of course facebook, they can simply rant or rave about aything that they want, either one their page or on others. Lastly they can also go on local forums and receive information on anything that they would like but they can also contribute to existing threads or start new ones. The whole picture that Macarthur is giving us is once again to educate the youth through or even about technology, we have to come up with new ways of interpreting our material and assignments with technology because many things in the new future including jobs will require people to work with teachnology most of the times. In conclusion it is easier to teach and prepare a young individual if surround them with this technology.

The author Vanessa Elaine Domine defines each of the stages of technology, and also mentions that as teachers we must know all the stages and how each of them work to find the best way to help out our students. For the first stage she has defined it as what the educator uses for themselves such as a phone to make calls or a computer to simply check their emails and write to others. In the second stage where she calls it professional, this is where the teacher would use their phone or their computer to communicate with other teachers or even the principal within the school setting. They might use this to ask if a students has arrived to a class to see if they are skipping, or to call for assistance. The last of the stages is the pedagogical stage where the teachers would use the technology directly to help the students within the classroom or while they are on a field which is the example that the author used in the book. The technology can be used in any classroom setting no matter what subject it is, from geography to psychology to physical education.

In the gymnasium it will be somewhat hard to do, since there already is no technology within the gymnasium like a computer or a celular phone. One example that can be used in the physical education classroom would be to give the children a little homework to do with checking videos online. Let us say that we will be trying to teach the students how to do a proper soccer kick, we are trying to teach it to young elementary students. I will give them a paper with a checklist, they would have to mark off what they see in the video, i will also provide them three videos. Some of the things that they would have to check off would be: knee over the ball, does not lean back, leg trials in back , foot is planted beside the ball. This would be something that the younger students would be able to do since it is very simple and it is something that they can see over and over again so they can reproduce the same later. With older students I would not give them the checklist at all and they would have to write down only the right things that the kicker does in the video. It may also be used for the teachers for making their plans, or to help out students or even other teachers.

Technology is something that most of the children will have quite a lot of experience with by the time that they would be in the sixth grade. It is the teacher’s duty to try to keep up with the technology even though it is changing and be able to identify the different teaching approaches that would be best suitable to show to the children. The following video shows just how fast technology can change and all the predictions tht were made about technology and how they were all correct and occured years in advance.

here is a video to further explain my point

There also different ages that different types of technology should be introduced to different age children. To give them the best possible learning experience possible. Also each of students would be in different stages and could be capable of doing different things with the technology available to them (1). Just because we are going into a more technological era it does not mean that the students are all at the same level with different types of technology(2). Some of the students might be only known as enthusiasts where they would just simply know how to use their little Ipod and put songs on it from their computer. Whereas some other children might be categorized as professionals because their parents would buy them different pieces of technology such as gaming consoles and powerful computers, this might be because their parents could be computer programmer or designers of some sort and their children would just sort of follow in their footsteps at a very young age.

Today discussion boards are such a great place to teach, learn, and read about new stuff. They can be used virtually by anyone and for anyone. Some discussion boards are used to transmit any sort of information about literally anything there is out there. They can be dedicated to electronics, cars, computers, television, phones, politics, the list just goes on and on. People can go on some of these sites to get information on how to ressolve some problems, or information about a product and see other peoples opinion. Some good examples of these sites are Montrealracing and Howardforums. These two sites are typical discussion forums, they both have different topics wihtin the site. Some examples with the Montrealracing discussion board is that they have a buy and seel area, an area where they talk about racing (drag, sprint, drifting, etc) and they also have it divided by the type of car (european, japanese, american).

Some teachers also use discussion boards to help out their students and also in some cases for students to help other students outside of the classroom. Some people have also referred to discussion forums as classrooms and little communities, the reason being is that there are many people that are willing to help one individual who needs information about something (1).

As the author has mentioned discussion forums are part of the first stage pedagogical development and that is content management. What he means by this is that yes people are allowed to write whatever they like about any subject but they would still have limits as to what they can write. There are moderators and administrators on these discussion boards, they are like the police (2). Their main job is to eliminate all of the pollutants on the discussion boards, for example if someone writes something rude or uses language that they are not allowe to use. They have the ability to either delete the post or also get rid of the member that posted the illegal material.

People can also use discussion boards to find services, a roomate, or for a longterm relationship. It is alot easier than going through that big old 10 pound phonebook that we use as a book support for other books. Both the person offering the service and the person looking for the service can use these discussion forums, in a way it sort of helps the economy. In conclusion discussion boards are a very positive thing to have on our internet, there are not much negative parts other than very few people commiting fraud. Discussion boards are her for many different people like people starting businesses, people who have businesses, people who just want information, or for people to feel socially connected with others, one thing is for sure and that is that the discussion boards are here to stay.

here is the video to further explain my point

When reading the two chapters of the book I have agreed on some points made by the authors and also disagreed with some of their points. The argument that he has made on the third world countries being controlled by economic pressure or by military force is very true and I completely agree. There are many companies around the world that practice this form cruelty, including companies like Wal Mart, Nike, some Apple products, and Sony. These companies exploit many people throughout the third world whether it is in South America, Africa, Asia and some parts of Europe. The first thing that they do is setup a factory in a poor village or city for people to work in. These people are paid almost nothing, some not even making a dollar a day. After a while when the village has decided to revolt against the big coorperation and demand for more money, the company simply shuts down that factory, leaving the people unemployed in an even worse condition. The company would soon after open up another factory in another poor city or town and would repeat the same as before.

The next point on which i agreed on is that military force will also control countries and countries are able to run under military force. It has worked so many times throughout history starting with the Egyptians, to the Greeks, to the Romans, then in the Medieval times and today North Korea is doing the same. A perfect example for a country in the process of controlling another country through military force is the United States of America stepping into Iraq to stop them from using their weapons of mass destruction, oh wait that is what the media wants us to think. The Americans are using their military force to control the oil reserves in the middle east everyone knows that now, but this statement was once a conspiracy theory when the Americans just went into the middle east decades ago. The brave soldiers who risk their lives are all very good men and women individually, but once they are referred to an army they are known as the bad people because of the orders that the big man at the top has given them.

Now moving on to the points where I have disagreed with authors and continuing with some conspiracy theories. He mentions some points of Al Quaida, where he linked them to the 9/11 attacks. There is without a doubt in my mind that Al Quaida had nothing to do with the tearing down of the world trade centers, I believe it was the Americans themselves that caused these buildings to collapse. The buildings only took 9 seconds to fall to the ground which is normal…at freefall speed. The American media still try to tell us that the building fell because of the pancake effect, that is when the upper floors cannot support their weight and fall down to the next and then next until hitting the ground, this would only be true if it took the building over 16 seconds to fall. So how were these building brought down at freefall speed, simple… dynamite, the buildings fell just like they did in any normal demolition. You don’t beleive me just checkout the videos all over the internet and you will see for yourself that there are small pieces of concrete popping out from the side of the building just a couple floors from where the floors are collapsing. Also there are many more people including firemen, policemen, journalist, and victims that all say they heard explosions. Also the American government has been sending out mixed signals about targeting the buildings many years in advance, don’t beleive me again, just watch the video below. Last but not least above many other parts to this conspiracy the owner of the two buildings has renewed his insurance policies just 2 months before the buildings collapsed specifically against terrorist attacks for 99 million dollars each, just a coincedence, i don’t think so. The story just goes on and on…
